Friendly Faces

The following little 4inch x 4inch cuties have been taking up some of my time in the past couple of weeks as I’m making them to show and sell alongside my new creatures at The Front Room.  People who’ve read previous posts may notice the similarity between these and the Peeper Trio I gifted to my boyfriend last year. I love making these little paintings,  and I find them so adorable that I can’t help but squee at them when I add the final touches to each.

I’m trying to think of different animals I can reconfigure to my quirky style of drawing and painting, and will also be doing these in different colour combinations and sizes for a few other upcoming projects, including the DNA Market which will be on the 3rd of July – more details on that to come!

Creatures

Since the final year of my Bachelor’s degree (in Visual Arts) I’ve been incorporating cute (and sometimes slightly odd) creatures into my landscape paintings.  Recently I was offered the opportunity to have some creatures on display and for sale at The Front Room – away from their landscape habitats!

While I’ve made small creatures before as gifts for people, it has been a challenge getting them to a standard I’m happy with for public display and sale.  I’ve spent the best part of the last two weeks learning new stitches, drawing up little sketches, and bringing some wee fellows to life.  This week I took them out for a little photo shoot, as I’ll be delivering them to the gallery next week and felt they needed some fresh air (and photo opportunities) before I part with them!

Cute! I will be endeavouring  to create more of these fun little fellows as I have another project coming up in July at which I’d like to have a whole bunch to sell! In the meantime, hopefully people are interested in them at the gallery.  If anyone reading this would like one, I can do custom colours/faces/bodies perhaps!

Etsy Feature – Cute Jewellery #2

There’s always room for more accessories, so it’s time for more cute jewellery finds from Etsy!  I’m always on the hunt for original pieces, and I’ve found some more wonderful sellers on Etsy to share with you!

Gingerbread Jewelry

27 year old Natascha from New Hampshire makes delectably kawaii jewellery in a similar vein to some of the other sellers I’ve featured, yet her pieces are still completely unique and utterly adorable.  Her shop Gingerbread Jewelry has all sorts of cuteness such as pancakes, bunnies and even a burger and fries necklace, if that’s your type of thing. The shop is full of great one-of-a-kind items, separated into collections for easy browsing!

As a change, I decided to include some jewellery that isn’t completely over-the-top in it’s cuteness.  The accessories by Sabine at The Pudding Store are still cute, but in a slightly more reserved way than that of my usual choices.  Of course that doesn’t mean they aren’t all completely lovely, because they are. Very lovely indeed. Plus, in case it isn’t obvious by now, I love bunnies.

Sabine also has another shop on Etsy  called  The Pudding Store Vintage which specialises in vintage clothes, shoes and accessories.

The Baby Loves Pink store on Etsy is pretty much summed up in the 3 words listed on the shop’s main page: fun, cute and colourful! The shop showcases dozens of super-cute goodies featuring food, animals and pretty much everything else that I love, and it’s not just limited to jewellery! Keep an eye out for the amazingly cute panda scarf!

The shops selected for this feature are so full of wonderful items, so it was hard to choose just a few from each to show you! Make sure to visit the stores to see all the cuteness and don’t forget to support handmade!

New Little Friends

I used to incorporate sewing into my work.  In the final year of my degree, I presented a series of works that I’m still very fond of that were similar to the work I’m doing now, in that they were abstract landscapes. The difference with these works was the inclusion of hand-sewn plush creatures.  This week I decided to start sewing again.

mini creature

I made 2 little creatures, including the one pictured above. I’m considering painting a place for them to live, but I’m not sure yet.

As well as these tiny creatures, each of which measures no more than a couple of centimetres in height, I also made a gift for my brother-in-law’s birthday. It seems so weird calling him my brother-in-law, as my sister only got married a couple of months ago. Anyway, here he is (the creature, not the brother-in-law):

My sewing skills seem to have deteriorated a little in the couple of years break I took from sewing, and the fact that I don’t use a machine means that there are very obvious flaws in the stitching – but I kind of like that.

So what does anyone else think? Should I keep sewing and perhaps re-incorporate these creatures into my paintings?

Amy Sol

Leaving Downey Cloud IslandLeaving Downy Cloud Island

Creating sweetly serene scenes that feature wispy girls with anthropomorphic animal friends, Amy Sol’s  peaceful muted colour palette interacts naturally with the wood grain board that she often works on and these elements come together as detailed otherworldly vistas.  Her works range from softly penciled graphite drawings and sensitively painted gouache works, through to her deeply intricate acrylic paintings.

We Found Ourselves Being DreamtWe Found Ourselves Being Dreamt

Sol works intuitively, creating fantasy-fueled scenes directly from her mind.  Her influences include folk art, vintage illustration, manga and modern design and she has mentioned Kay Nielsen and Range Murata among the artists that have inspired her.

Her work (along with that of many other artists) is even available as vinyl skins for cellphones, laptops and a range of other electronic devices from Gelaskins. Pensive pandas to inspire on a daily basis sounds like a super cute idea.

In the previous 5 years, Sol has participated in many group and solo shows, both in the US and internationally.  This year she has been in two group shows and has an upcoming solo show at the Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, California. If you are anywhere near this venue I implore you to go to her show! I imagine her work is even more magical in person. Sol was born and spent her childhood in Korea; she now lives and works in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Peeper Trio

It’s kind of fun giving people paintings as gifts as it gives me an excuse to paint something different than I usually would. I painted this fun wee trio of animals for my boyfriend’s birthday which was in June.  Yay for cute and slightly misshapen animals!

Puricute

I’m sure this website is nothing new to a lot of people, but I only happened across it today and it’s got me very excited.  I’ve always loved those photo booth machines that you can get your photo taken and find your face strewn with stars and phrases with meanings that somehow got lost in translation.

The only problem with these machines is that you spend somewhere between $5 and $15 dollars and end up with only a few small photos or stickers, which in my case generally end up being lost in the recesses of a wallet or handbag. Either that or whoever I’m with will have no part in posing for ridiculous photos.

puricuteYes, that is a pirate cat by my face.

Puricute solves both of these problems!  Puricute is a website with a simple flash player based system that allows you to upload any photo from your computer and turn it into a cutesy overloaded sugary photobooth style concoction.  Do you want a strange penguin-like animal on your cheek? You can have it. Feel like putting your face on a Japanese street sign?  You can do that too.

It’s incredibly fun to play around with and gives normal photos a cute injection.  And just in case you do want a tangible version of your creation, you can buy sticker pictures directly from the site.
