First Thursdays!

How exciting! I have been accepted to be a part of the First Thursdays event for March.  I’ll be showing a few older works (2007!) along with 3 works that I aim to finish in the next week.  That in itself will be a challenge, but it’s so great to have something to work towards so I’m feeling pretty positive about getting them done to a high standard. I’m also hoping to have time to create a few mini pieces and little friends, and everything there will be for sale!

If you’re in Auckland, come along! There will be a vast array of artists, crafty things and performers. I’m also led to believe there is Isaac’s Cider on offer, which is a refreshing beverage I can’t turn down and neither should you!

Details:

First Thursdays, Thursday March 4 2010, 6-9pm

St Kevin’s Arcade, Karangahape Road, Auckland

Etsy Feature – Cute Jewellery #2

There’s always room for more accessories, so it’s time for more cute jewellery finds from Etsy!  I’m always on the hunt for original pieces, and I’ve found some more wonderful sellers on Etsy to share with you!

Gingerbread Jewelry

27 year old Natascha from New Hampshire makes delectably kawaii jewellery in a similar vein to some of the other sellers I’ve featured, yet her pieces are still completely unique and utterly adorable.  Her shop Gingerbread Jewelry has all sorts of cuteness such as pancakes, bunnies and even a burger and fries necklace, if that’s your type of thing. The shop is full of great one-of-a-kind items, separated into collections for easy browsing!

The Pudding Store

As a change, I decided to include some jewellery that isn’t completely over-the-top in it’s cuteness.  The accessories by Sabine at The Pudding Store are still cute, but in a slightly more reserved way than that of my usual choices.  Of course that doesn’t mean they aren’t all completely lovely, because they are. Very lovely indeed. Plus, in case it isn’t obvious by now, I love bunnies.

The Baby Loves Pink store on Etsy is pretty much summed up in the 3 words listed on the shop’s main page: fun, cute and colourful! The shop showcases dozens of super-cute goodies featuring food, animals and pretty much everything else that I love, and it’s not just limited to jewellery! Keep an eye out for the amazingly cute panda scarf!

Mala Iqbal

High Altitude Sunset - 2009

Mala Iqbal paints landscapes which I find to be pretty epic. They may not be everyone’s taste, but I am feeling heavily inspired after discovering her work.  Her use of colours and detailed interludes draw you into the work, and she uses paint in a uniquely admirable fashion.

Swamp

The Traveler

While browsing her website, I found it interesting to observe the progression that is obvious from looking through the archives.  Her style has developed from something that appears heavily influenced by graffiti and spray paint art to more organic looking landscape representations. The works included in the post are in reverse chronological order, the first image being one of most recent works from 2009, through to the last one which is from 2006.

Gumdrop

The Jungle

Mala has both a BA in Visual Arts and English from Columbia University NYC and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.  She has been exhibiting regularly since 2001. Please visit her site here to see more of her amazing paintings.

Fuco Ueda

Japanese artist Fuco Ueda was born in 1979. She lives in Japan and exhibits there regularly, as far as I can tell from her website.  I emailed Fuco to ask her permission to feature her on my blog and got this response:

Hello,

Thank you for an email.
Unfortunately I cannot speak English.
Please forgive the thing answered in faltering English.
Thank you for your having been interested in my artwork.

I feel an email from you very glad.
I was interested.
I permit.

Thank you.

And so I present to you some images of the whimsical surreal work of Fuco Ueda. My favourite one is last. Mmm funghi.

Amy Sol

Leaving Downey Cloud IslandLeaving Downy Cloud Island

Creating sweetly serene scenes that feature wispy girls with anthropomorphic animal friends, Amy Sol’s  peaceful muted colour palette interacts naturally with the wood grain board that she often works on and these elements come together as detailed otherworldly vistas.  Her works range from softly penciled graphite drawings and sensitively painted gouache works, through to her deeply intricate acrylic paintings.

We Found Ourselves Being DreamtWe Found Ourselves Being Dreamt

Sol works intuitively, creating fantasy-fueled scenes directly from her mind.  Her influences include folk art, vintage illustration, manga and modern design and she has mentioned Kay Nielsen and Range Murata among the artists that have inspired her.

Dream Distant CousinDream Distant Cousin

Her work (along with that of many other artists) is even available as vinyl skins for cellphones, laptops and a range of other electronic devices from Gelaskins. Pensive pandas to inspire on a daily basis sounds like a super cute idea.

In the previous 5 years, Sol has participated in many group and solo shows, both in the US and internationally.  This year she has been in two group shows and has an upcoming solo show at the Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, California. If you are anywhere near this venue I implore you to go to her show! I imagine her work is even more magical in person. Sol was born and spent her childhood in Korea; she now lives and works in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jiha Moon

WHERE ARE THEY (SUPER HEROES)?WHERE ARE THEY (SUPER HEROES)?

A couple of years ago whilst in the search for some inspiration, I happened across the work of Korean born artist Jiha Moon.  I was immediately drawn into a state of enthrallment as I perused the Google Image search results and then even more excited when I discovered her website, with a complete back-catalogue of images.

Her work is colourful and exciting; combining elements of landscape, pop art and surrealism in mixed media works that modernise traditional Asian landscapes using saccharine-sweet colours and invented creatures.  A combination of abstraction and representation, traditional and modern, the work of Jiha Moon is, put simply,  incredible to behold.

Moon is currently located in Atlanta, Georgia and regularly exhibits in both solo and group shows.
